JRL Newsletter, New Moon Edition July 2022

This new moon edition is dedicated to Sobonfu Some.

It contains refections from her book, Women’s Wisdom from the Heart of Africa.

Join me on Tuesday evening for further exploration by joining my book club where

we will read, write and discuss her book together.

Chapter 1: Offering Your Gift to the World

Who would I be? If I understood all that I am meant - my name, my purpose, my song

How would I move, if I knew that I was a gift?

To whom would I speak if I understood I was a community weaver and leader?

How would I smell if I reclaimed my wildness?

What could I see if I was guided by a spiritual connection?

How would life taste standing on the shoulders of the knowing ancestors that come before me?

Reclaim the indigenous woman, the wise woman within.

This is my poem based on Chapter one

and it is also your writing practice.

Who are you?

Chapter 2: Women’s Mysteries:

Honoring the Female Life Cycle

Listening to this chapter brought up a lot of grief for me because I didn’t have a reverence for my cycle at all. It was a time to get through, to bear, to medicate for the most part until it was done. Something to ignore as I worked and set timers to remember when to change tampons.

When I was 47, 48 I came upon a book which taught me to honor and create ritual for my cycle – not to stuff my body – creating an energetic “no” simply to allow. To bleed into the earth. To pray. This opened something within me and I was lucky to have my last few years of menstruation this way.

Reading this chapter opens a world of reverence for my body and allows me to begin to grieve the pain of the time I didn’t know better so that I can have gratitude and more alignment with the time I have today.

“Power is about using the sacred to be aligned with all of the different dimensions of life so we can be attuned to those different vibrations.”
